My
Story

Get to Know Me

Hi, my name is John Anderson, I am a Data analytics and Database Management student at Western Governors University who also works full-time at Target as a member of the Grocery team. When I'm not at work or studying you can find me working on tech-related pet projects or sewing. Through years of experience in retail, I have gained the ability to properly communicate with others especially customers, quickly and efficiently respond to questions, and delegate responsibilities to others.

01

Education

Hardin Valley Academy

In High School I participated in several extracurricular activities including: FIRST Robotics competition, AFA CyberPatriot competition, CodeTN, and Scouts of America. These organizations helped lay the foundation for what I wanted to do with my life and who I want to be.

02

Pellissippi State Community College

At PSTCC I learned how to approach Post-Secondary academia to retain and continue my education throughout the rest of my life. I Attended from the Fall of 2017 through the Spring of 2019. I officially wrapped up the last course I needed to qualify for the reverse transfer program at Tennessee Tech during the Fall semester of 2022.

03

Tennessee Tech/ Western Governors University

At Tennessee Tech I was in the Computer Science program with a concentration in Data Science and a minor in History. After several semesters of High-Level programming, I learned that this was not the calling for me. After consulting my family and friends I decided to find a major that was more in line with my strengths and less stressful on my weaknesses. At the end of a long search, I discovered the Data Analytics/ Database Management Degree at Western Governors University. As an online University WGU offered me a flexible schedule to be able to continue to work full time while taking a full semester of classes.

Work Experience

01

Industrial Electronics

This job provided an introduction to the use of an inventory database to be used by employees to properly keep track of all tools and supplies needed for a job.

03

The Thrift Store

This experience gave me ample opportunities to manage several small Excel sheets to keep track of feedback and suggestions for the store. Here I also helped maintain a database to help coordinate pick-up requests.

02

Concord United Methodist Church

During this Job, I understood the need for a database for feedback between staff members and to better document this than just verbal conversations and emails.

04

Target

Here is where I learned firsthand about the need for a database for inventory. I was also able to help make suggestions to the development team to change different elements of the donation system to prevent waste of products that could have gone to help feed others.
